I Love You Too! By Michael Foreman, published by Andersen Press
The best bit of my working day is without question getting home just in time to read my daughter two books before she goes to sleep. Perhaps particularly because I'm a dad, I feel additional resonance with I Love You Too by Michael Foreman than with some other books we read and love.
It's relatively unusual for a picture book to focus on the love between a father and child and it's wonderful for these feelings to be expressed on the page so fulsomely. It makes it all the more special an experience to read these words aloud to our toddler and to do so while we look together at Foreman's beautifully expansive illustrations. These are a wondrous showcasing of the infinacy of nature (all the fishes in the sea, all the stars in the sky, all the colours of a rainbow), just as infinite as the affection the little bear and his dad have for each other.
It is a sweet ending too, as the tired dad finally falls asleep and is tucked in by the little bear, who reads the story, which we have just finished, all over again.
