On Sudden Hill

On Sudden Hill Words by Linda Sarah, illustrated by Benji Davies, published by Simon and Schuster Children's Books

This is a perfect picture book, with all the ingredients that our toddler loves: Beautiful and sweeping illustrations with great attention to tiny details, combined with challenging words that hold her attention through a current of rhythm and verve.

It's an ideal book for small children wanting to explore their imaginations through adventure, and to help explain new emotions, such as the push and pull of friendships.

Like other books featured on this site, it's a book that seamlessly matches its words to its illustrations. It's hard to imagine any better partnership for Linda Sarah's musical, evocative words, than the drawings of Benji Davies (our toddler adores "The Storm Whale" too).

On Sudden Hill is also directly responsible for instigating hours of quality dad/daughter time spent painting, decorating and playing in a huge cardboard box (or rather a half-postoffice, half-treehouse creation) that has since dominated our living room for nearly a month!

With many thanks to Linda Sarah for allowing use of the book's cover image with this review
