I Love You Night and Day, Words by Smriti Prasadam-Halls, illustrated by Alison Brown, published by Bloomsbury Children's.
This is one of the first books our toddler loved. It's a brilliant example of a picture book where the words and illustrations are perfectly matched. The sentiment of the couplets is sweet and true such as: "I love you with my whole heart. From where you end to where you start".
Alison Brown's illustrations are full of life and movement. The scene of the bear and the rabbit dancing in the rain is possibly our favourite illustration to date. It's joyous and wild and evocative of the very best of childhood.
We found that it was a perfect book to read from our child's earliest months, and she still loves it two years on. It has a lovely rhythm to help babies get a sense of language and tone, and later the gentle rhyming will help toddlers read along to the story.
With many thanks to Smriti Prasadam-Halls for permitting the use of her book's cover image alongside this review.
